Sharing the Harvest is the third resource in the Cultivate Your Commitment to Canada series. This collection of three activity guides is designed for use in schools and community youth groups across Canada at the Grade 4-8 level. The resources explore the nature of Canadian citizenship, the values that we share as Canadians and the responsibilities inherent in participating actively in Canadian society and the global community.
Sharing the Harvest examines what it means to belong to the Canadian garden in the context of the larger global environment. Our shared commitment to peace, respect, justice and stewardship for the earth means that it is not enough for us to collect the bounties of our own harvest — it is also our responsibility to share our crops, contribute to the sustainability of the global garden and ensure that the bounty that we enjoy does not come at the expense of others. The activities provide opportunities for students to explore what it means to be a global citizen and develop awareness of global issues. Learning experiences encourage youth to recognize their connection to others around the world and to understand the potential power of their individual and combined actions. |
The resource includes
- a teacher's guide containing ready-to-use activities that explore our interconnections with the global community and the ways that each of us as Canadians can affect the lives of others around the world. The guide includes all handouts and complete lesson plans plus teaching tips for supportive pedagogy.
- an interactive activity chart that can be ordered in class sets to allow students an opportunity to record and reflect on their learning.
- a themed poster to introduce the unit
