Planting the Seeds is the first resource in the Cultivate Your Commitment to Canada series. This collection of three activity guides is designed for use in schools and community youth groups across Canada at the Grade 4-8 level. The resources explore the nature of Canadian citizenship, the values that we share as Canadians, and the responsibilities inherent in participating actively in Canadian society and the global community.
Planting the Seeds helps youth to understand that part of being a Canadian citizen is making a commitment to contribute positively to our community and our country in our daily thoughts, actions and decisions. It encourages youth to respect the rights of others, embrace diversity, reject intolerance, promote a culture of peace and take care of each other and the earth. The activities are designed to nurture the development of skills needed for youth to support, internalize and act in congruence with the values we wish to cultivate. |
The resource includes
- a teacher's guide that examines the rights and responsibilities associated with citizenship and explores the values we share as Canadians - values such as respect, acceptance, peace, justice and democracy. The guide includes all handouts and complete lesson plans plus teaching tips for supportive pedagogy.
- an interactive activity chart that can be ordered in class sets to allow students an opportunity to record and reflect on their learning
- a themed poster to introduce the unit
