Cultivating Peace — Taking Action

The second resource in the Cultivating Peace series, Cultivating Peace — Taking Action encourages youth to recognize the power of their individual attitudes, behaviours and actions in supporting a culture of violence or building a culture of peace. Grounded in the basic concepts explored in Cultivating Peace in the 21st Century, Taking Action focuses on how each of us can promote change in our homes, our schools, our neighbourhoods and our global community. It has applications in grades 10, 11 and 12 Social Science, Civics and History curricula across Canada.

The resource includes:
  • The Taking Action teacher's guide, which provides ready-to-use student activities that encourage youth to recognize the power of their individual attitudes, behaviours and actions in supporting a culture of violence or building a culture of peace.
  • The video A Quiet Revolution, which explores the power of individual action in shaping solutions for our global future. The video was produced by the Earth Council in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Program under the sponsorship of Soka Gakkai International.
  • The Seeds of Change poster series (created by Soka Gakkai International and the Earth Charter Initiative), which was first shown at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg in 2002. (Out of print)
  • The Earth Charter brochure, which declares fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable and peaceful global society in the 21st century. This charter was formally supported by the 32nd General Conference of UNESCO in October 2003.
  • A hands-on tool for youth titled Guide to Action, produced by the international youth organization TakingITGlobal.
